Nelson Mandela's 90th Birthday

Mr. Nelson Mandela is turning 90 on 18 July 2008 and Nelson Mandela Children's Fund (NMCF) is hosting a series of events in celebration of his birthday under the theme, Celebrating a Children's Champion. In honour of Mr. Mandela's legacy and his love for children, NMCF will be participating in provincial, national and regional discussion forums referred to as "Nelson Mandela Children's Fund Youth in Parliament."

Children's Hospital

Annual Report

The Management Trustees are responsible for the preparation, integrity and fair presentation of the financial statements of the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund. The financial statements presented on pages 31 to 49 have been prepared in accordance with South African Statements of Generally Accepted Accounting Practice ("GAAP"), and include amounts based on judgements and estimates made by management.

Our History

Driven by his love for children and a desire to end their suffering, former President Mandela established the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund (NMCF) in 1995. From 1996 to 1998, NMCF successfully mobilized over R36 million to fund over 780 projects, at an average of R40, 000 per project. Grounded in the legacy of its founder, NMCF initially operated as a grant-making organization promoting a humanitarian response to the plight of South Africa's children and youth.

The 1995-1999 period was characterised by ad hoc funding strategies that enabled children and families to meet immediate needs, and one-time support for overhead and salary costs for organisations targeting children's issues, with no particular programmatic basis for NMCF's engagement with these organisations.

Funds Distributed

In the ten years of the Fund's existence it has grown steadily both in range and depth of work with children. The way in which the Fund has responded to children's needs has developed over the last ten years.

Despite important and unprecedented levels of improvement in terms of service delivery over the last ten years, the problem of social deprivation and exclusion remains huge. This is greater for children than for the poor generally as children are dependent on others. It must, however, be emphasized that most of the problems being faced by children in South Africa do not stem from absence of policy but from policy implementation and inadequate access to service. This context, and our project experience, means that the Fund has an obligation and responsibility to become a greater proactive advocate...
